Liverpool have surprisingly turned to Steven Caulker to ease their defensive injury crisis.
The QPR defender’s stock has fallen in recent seasons and he had been enduring a difficult spell on loan at Southampton, where he had struggled to tie-down a regular starting spot.
But this loan was terminated early after Liverpool struck a deal
with QPR and Caulker, 24, could even feature in Wednesday night's
Premier League match against Arsenal.
Liverpool are without defensive quintet Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Joe Gomez, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure through injury – although the latter duo could return against Arsenal.
Caulker, 24, is eligible for the Europa League and the FA Cup.
He last featured, coincidentally, in Southampton’s 6-1 defeat against
Liverpool in the League Cup.
The centre-back came up through Tottenham's youth system before joining Cardiff
for a fee of £8 million in July 2013. A year later he switched to QPR
for the same amount, joining Southampton on loan following the club's
relegation from the Premier League in 2015.
Caulker made six starts for Saints, only one of which was in the Premier League.
